Brennan Manning: The Definition of Love

I just watched/listened to this message and wanted to pass it along to you.  It’s a great investment of time.  Here are some of my favorite moments of a message we need to hear.  The message that Abba loves you, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

  • “If you don’t know what hurts me, how can you say you love me?  What made Jesus of Nazareth the greatest lover in human history is that He really knew and knows what hurts his people.”
  • “The compassion of Jesus is the compassion of the Almighty God and Jesus says to your heart and mine, ‘Don’t ever be so foolish to measure my compassion for you in terms of your compassion for one another.  Don’t ever be so silly as to compare your thin, palate, wavering, capricious, fickle, moody, depending on circumstances, for I am God as well as man’.”
  • “If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the 43 years since I’d been ambushed by Jesus, if you call Jesus goodness, he’ll be good to you, if you call Him love, he’ll love you, but if you call him compassion, He’ll know.”
  • “Do you know Him?  Not about Him?”

“The day you surrender in faith in unwavering trust, in reckless confidence to the compassion of Jesus over your life, I promise you every trace of shame, guilt, remorse, self-hatred, self-condemnation will vanish from your life.  Jesus is the transforming power of the love of God.”

  • “What kind of God says, ‘Make my home in me as I make my home in you’.”
  • “Jesus says, ‘I call you my friend’.”
  • “Faith is the courage to accept the acceptance of Jesus Christ.”
  • “You are never more Christlike then when you are choked with compassion for the brokenness of others.”

“Jesus says, ‘I expected more of failure from you than you expected from yourself.  Take your eyes off of yourself, fix your eyes on me, and let me be who I am:  Savior.'”
